Outings & Events

The Worthing u3a Committee want to hear your ideas for Outings and Events!

In the past we have arranged:

But!

To arrange any event needs volunteers, such as an 'Events Organiser' and/or a 'Day Trip Organiser'. These do not have to be Committee posts just someone with enthusiasm and drive (and time).

Please contact the Committee if you would like to volunteer.

Marine Gardens, West Parade, Worthing, BN115EF

Destination : Penshurst Place
Date               : 15th May 2026

Penshurst Place & Gardens and the surrounding estate have stood in the historic village of Penshurst since the 14th century as a country retreat for the Lord Mayor of London.

The original medieval house is one of the most complete surviving examples of 14th-century domestic architecture in England. The Baron’s Hall, crowned by an original 60ft high chestnut beamed ceiling is an unmissable sight.
The stately home and gardens were once used as a hunting lodge for King Henry VIII. The Solar, Queen Elizabeth Room and Long Gallery to name but a few, contain a collection of beautiful family portraits from across the centuries, antique furniture, skilfully crafted tapestries and much, much more.

At around 50 acres the Gardens and Grounds are one of Britain’s most alluring and seductive spectacles throughout the year. Majestically surrounding the house, over one mile of yew hedging divides the Garden into a series of ‘rooms’, each with its own season and colour. Wander further afield and visit the Arboretum, Trout Lakes, Lake Park and Lancup Well.

The grounds are fully accessible but there are gravel paths (uneven in places) and areas of lawn which may be difficult for wheelchairs users. For wheelchair users and those with walking or mobility difficulties, there are a variety of alternative routes and experiences.

There is a 10-minute walk from the coach park to the House entrance, and there is limited access to the upper floors of the House due to uneven steps and spiral staircases.

As usual there is a cafe, a shop and toilets.

I noticed that Penshurst Place is an English Heritage house and a member of HHA. The garden is an RHS garden, but unfortunately these concessions cannot be used with a group booking.

The cost is £32.00 per person and is open to members only.

Closing date is the 1st April and full payment must be paid before then.

If you would like to come on this trip log on to the u3a website, join the group ‘Penshurst Place Day Trip’.

If you are unable to apply online there will be forms to complete so please email me and I will send you one. There will also be forms at the monthly meetings.

We will meet at the bottom of George V Avenue by the shelter at 8.45 for a 9.00 departure, and we hope to arrive at approx 11.00 . We will have a comfort stop on the way for those who need the toilet. We will have 4.00 hours there and you will be free to plan your day to suit you. We expect to leave at 3pm and be back in Worthing around 5pm.
